The duties outlined in this job description are in addition to those of any other roles held by the position holder. These may be modified by the Headmaster in consultation with the position holder to reflect or anticipate changes in the position.
Main duties and responsibilities are indicated below. Other duties of an appropriate level and nature may also be required, as directed by the Headmaster. Please note that the position holder may be required to work outside of normal school working hours for school events, meetings or completing time sensitive operations.

Purpose of Position:
Al Zahra College is an Independent Full Continuum IB, Islamic School in Arncliffe, Sydney. Our Muslim faith is a foundational element of who we are as a College. Our Muslim staff appreciate the significance of the Islamic faith and contribute to sharing it with students, parents, staff, and the wider community, through words and actions. Our non-Muslim staff respect and actively support the Muslim ethos of the College.
The Head of Primary is responsible for the day-to-day leadership and management of the Primary School. The Head of Primary provides strategic direction for the Primary School and promotes the aims of the school through the implementation of school policies and procedures. The Head of Primary assists the Headmaster in securing and maintaining an excellent education for all students, and in ensuring high standards of teaching, learning and achievement. The Head of Primary will ensure that all staff adhere to all policies and procedures.
Expectations:
As the educational leader and operational head of the Primary School, it is expected that the Head of
Primary will:
Demonstrate an explicit commitment to the philosophy, mission and vision of the school as determined by the School Board
Exhibit a broad and deep understanding of school leadership and management in an international context
Keep up-to-date with IB educational developments and research in the PYP
Communicate effectively with all school constituencies
Serve as an effective ambassador for the school both locally and internationally
Maintain an effective working relationship with the Headmaster, Head of Secondary and other members of the School Executive Team based on mutual respect, trust and confidentiality
General:
Ensuring the safety and well being of students and school employees
Ensuring that the organizational systems throughout the Primary School are effective and appropriate
Overseeing Primary School teaching schedules and duty rosters (PYP Coordinator)
Overseeing appropriate relief for absent teachers (PYP Coordinator)
Work with the PYP Coordinator to develop comprehensive calendar of key dates and event for school community and PYP specifically
The scheduling, planning and managing of parent-teacher conferences, information sessions, and other such routine and special events
The review and organization of PYP written reports to parents according to the school’s Reporting and Assessment Policy
Manage disciplinary issues in the Primary School
Cooperating with the Head of Secondary to ensure that the school offers a coherent and consistent approach to all academic Programmes at the College
Working with School Executive Team, to ensure that all necessary measures are taken to maintain the school’s accreditation status with AIS
Representing the school at educational and other appropriate events Implement an effective assessment framework.
Monitoring, evaluating and reviewing classroom practice and promoting improvement strategies.
Challenging under performance at all levels and ensuring effective corrective action and follow-up.
Taking a strategic role in the development of new and emerging technologies to enhance and extend the learning experience of students and staff.
Enrollment:
Working with the Enrollment officer to ensure that students entering the Primary School are tested prior to admission and appropriately placed Conducting interviews with families wishing to enroll in the Primary school and submitting recommendations to the Enrollment Officer.
Curriculum:
Overseeing the effective delivery of the PYP curriculum
Ensuring that the PYP curriculum is delivered in line with school policies and aligned with NESA outcomes
Ensuring that students are allocated to appropriate teaching groups
Ensuring that the Primary School appropriately integrates the use of ICT within the curriculum
Promoting the use of learning opportunities outside the classroom by Primary teachers
Supporting cross-phase Curriculum (Primary / Secondary)
Management of Learning & Teaching:
Managing and monitoring the quality of learning, teaching and assessment within the Primary School, in line with school policy, and constantly striving to improve it
Managing the Primary Leadership Team to ensure that the curriculum in the PYP meets the educational and developmental needs of all students
Implementing an effective assessment framework, by ensuring that individual student achievement is monitored and tracked carefully to ensure that students are achieving in line with their expected potential or better
Analyzing the results of student standardized tests (NAPLAN and PAT) and taking appropriate action to improve overall levels of attainment in such external assessment
Managing the transition of students from Year 6 (Primary) to Year 7 (Secondary) in liaison with the Head of Secondary
Management of Staff:
Ensure effective planning, allocation, support and evaluation of work undertaken by teams and individuals, including clear delegation of tasks and devolution of responsibilities.
Teacher Accreditation Authority (TAA) Authorised Delegate for all teaching staff. Managing accreditation decisions about whether teachers have achieved and maintained the standards
Ensuring that all teaching staff are meeting accreditation requirements
Managing the appraisal and performance management of staff including conducting regular observations and walk-throughs of Primary classrooms as a reflective practice
Leading and managing Primary School teaching staff and teaching assistants/aides
Ensuring that all staff implement Whole School policies
Ensuring that staff are familiar with and act in accordance with the Staff Policies
Managing the professional development of Primary staff
Ensuring effective communication within the Primary School
Management of Resources:
In partnership with the Financial Administrator, and the Primary executive team, managing the
financial and human resources effectively and efficiently to achieve the school’s educational goals and priorities.
Overseeing resources requirements for the Primary School
Developing, implementing and evaluating the Primary School Development Plan in line with the
Whole School Development Plan
Communication with the School Community
Communicating regularly with parents both in writing and in person
Overseeing all written communication to parents and the wider community
Ensuring that all appropriate Primary School guides, handbooks and curriculum outlines are published and revised for parents, students and other relevant constituencies
Convening regular Primary School meetings at which curriculum planning, student progress, and teaching, learning and well being needs are discussed and good practices shared.
Specific Responsibilities
Updating and maintaining all School Policies on CompliSpace
Contributing to the development of whole school policies as appropriate
Regular training of all College staff on whole school policies
Induction and training of new staff on whole school policies
Managing relevant disciplinary procedures and correspondence for staff in consultation with the Head of Secondary and the Headmaster
Responsible for whole school correspondence or communication to parents in consultation with the Head of Secondary and the Headmaster
Responsible for overseeing all aspects of the Annual Report
Responsible for overseeing all updates from the Association of Independent Schools of NSW (AISNSW) involving school governance, accreditation, NCCD, professional learning, grants and funded programs in consultation with the Head of Secondary and the Headmaster.
Organizing NAPLAN assessments (Whole School) and adhering to key dates
Carrying out a high level analysis of NAPLAN results (data) cross the College
Working with the Head of Secondary and Coordinators to address NAPLAN gaps in knowledge
Responsible for organizing ICAS UNSW and/or other Educational Assessments
Responsible for administrating and overseeing regular standardised testing across all Primary Years
Working with the Islamic Committee to review the Islamic curriculum for the College
Responsible for overseeing the Primary Bulletin/ClassDojo/Skoolbag updates to primary parents
Responsible for reviewing the College Website content and ensuring the website is regularly updated and maintained in consultation with the Leadership Team
Contributing each month to the Headmaster’s Report to the School Board
Carrying out any other reasonable additional duties as directed by the Headmaster
Accountability:
Supporting the Headmaster and the Executive Team in accounting for the efficiency and effectiveness of the school to all relevant stakeholders on a day to day basis. To help create a culture in which all staff recognise that they must contribute to and are accountable for the success of the school. Ensure that parents and students are well informed about curriculum, attainment and progress and the contribution they can make to achieve the school’s targets for improvement.

The position holder is required to support and encourage the school’s ethos and its objectives, policies and procedures as agreed by the School’s Executive Team and School Board.
The position holder is required to maintain confidentiality of any information in any form of communication pertaining to the school, staff, students and parents that the position holder may be privy to. The position holder may be required to perform any other reasonable tasks after consultation with the Headmaster.
