Summary/Objective:


The Magellan International School (Colegio Internacional Magallanes) in Austin, Texas, is seeking a qualified and experienced Science Teacher to join our Secondary School team. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in science education, with demonstrated experience teaching Chemistry, and the ability to teach at both the middle and high school levels.


This position requires a passionate educator who can create a dynamic and progressive learning environment where students are encouraged to think critically and embody the attributes of the International Baccalaureate (IB) learner profile. In addition to supporting students’ academic and personal growth, the teacher will

actively ontribute to the broader school community through involvement in

extracurricular and community activities.


Essential Functions:


  • Plans and teaches Science lessons with a focus on Chemistry by following the

  • IB Middle Years Program (MYP) and/or Diploma Program (DP) curricula, differentiating for individual student needs.

  • Deliver engaging, IB-aligned instruction, fostering critical thinking and scientific inquiry, while preparing students for IB Diploma Programme examinations and contributing to a positive learning environment.

  • Attends staff/faculty meetings, supports colleagues, and collaborates with the MYP and/or DP Coordinator on curriculum planning and program effectiveness.

  • Collaborates with Secondary School faculty to plan activities, interdisciplinary projects, and disciplinary units.

  • Utilizes a variety of teaching strategies and technologies.

  • Participates in curriculum planning and student progress meetings.

  • Maintains up-to-date records of student progress, attendance, grades, and assessments.

  • Provides elective classes each semester.

  • Supervises an advisory class, providing social and emotional support for students.

  • Maintains high standards for academic performance and behavior.

  • Encourages student improvement and goal-setting.

  • Fosters an engaging learning environment that promotes critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity.

  • Organizes educational field trips to support the curriculum.

  • Supervises students during carline, breaks and lunch.

  • Prepares documentation for IB external assessments.

  • Effectively communicates with parents about student progress.

  • Promotes the school’s mission and builds relationships with community partners.


Other Duties:


Performs other duties as assigned, which may change at any time with or without

notice.


Required Qualifications:


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Chemistry or related field, or a Bachelor’s Degree in an unrelated field with Secondary Teacher Certification.

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience with the IB MYP and/or DP and three years of experience with secondary school students; or 5 years of Secondary School classroom experience if no IB experience.

  • Communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing.

  • Three years of experience focused on project-based learning preferred.

  • Experience integrating information technology (IT) with teaching.

  • Knowledge of curriculum development, program evaluation, instructional strategies, classroom management, and learning assessments.

Work Environment:


This job operates in a classroom environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines. This role requires lifting, bending, standing, and stooping.


Position Type and Expected Hours of Work:


“Core” work hours: 8:15 am to 4:15 pm from Tuesdays to Fridays and 8:15 am to 5:30 pm on Mondays.

Availability during occasional nights and weekend


Travel:

Some out-of-area travel may be expected, but is not common.

A criminal history background check will be required for finalist(s) under consideration for this position.
